Cambridge Road Board.
The above board met at Cambridge on Saturday, when there were present: Messrs R. Swayne, chairman, W. Newell, G. Booth, N. Banks, and J. Hooker. —Cattle on the Roads.—
The clerk reported he had been unable to get anyone to impound the cattle running on the roads, and it was decided to get the two surafcemen to do the work.—There are several horses on the roads that will probably die this winter, and the board does not wish to be put to the expense of burying them. The cattle are also getting a nuisance. —Atkinson's Road. —
Re the formation of this road: Mr Atkinson wrote stating it would be little use doing this road, unless fascines were laid in several parts of it, as the material that had been gathered up from the sides to make the crown was very rotten and of a pappy nature; and even when sand was put upon it, a shower of rain would cause it to work into bog holes. If it were not done he was afraid there would be a repetition of last season's difficulty, and rather than that should happen he would not commence to milk. —It was decided to reply that the board had not funds to go beyond the work contemplated.—lt was also pointed out that but for Mr Atkinson trying to get a new road leading out on to the main road near the factory, this road would have done long service. —French Pass Road. — Mi Hooker reported he had visited this road and found it needed repairing. While there he had interviewed Mr H. Ferguson, and he thought that gentleman would probably un dertake the work. Mr Hooker was asked to make the necessary arrangements with Mr Ferguson to get the work done. —An Energetic Settler.— Mr Hooker stated that Mr Smart had been deepening his drains, and he had also, be believed, deepened the one along the road; however, the extra water had washed away a portion of Mr Reid's land, and unless something was done to stop it, the road would in time be washed away. —lt was pointed out that no settler had any right to touch the drains along the roads unless with the permission of the board, and Mr Smart had not applied for that. No complaint having been received from Mr Reid no action was'taken; but it was decided to notify Mr Smart that the board would hold him responsible for any damage done to either the road or the adjoining land owners. —Pickering's Bridge.—
Messrs Newell and Hooker were a3ked to inspect this bridge, and decide what shall be done to it; but the board thought it would need raising. When they have done that tenders for the work will be called. —Roa 1 Repairs.— It was decided to patch the roads in the neighbourhood of the Hautapu Factory, before the milking season starts, and Mr Booth undertook to see what is necessary to be done; then tenders for the work will be called forthwith. —Selby's Drain. —■ It was stated it would be little use in cleaning out this drain, unless the willows growing on the banks were killed.—Mr Newell undertook to interview Mrs Gleeson, who now owns the farm formerly occupied by j Mr Selby, and endeavour to get her , to kill the willows. j —Disappearing Gravel. —■ [ A letter was received from Mr W. 1 F. Buckland, demanding payment of £2B 19s for gravel carted, less 12s 6d which was allowed for 25 loads of gravel taken from the board's pit.— The chairman said he had been offer ed 3s per load for gravel from the same pit; and it was resolved to pay the account, deducting 2s Gd per load for the 25 loads taken. : —Accounts. — The following accounts were passed for payment: Public debt, £l9 Is lOd; Eastwood and Stafford, £3; G. Burns, £lO Is; T. Pcnnell,£B 12s 6d; E. J. Wilkinson, 15s; T. Wells, 3s 9d.
