EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.

AUCKLAND BRANCH. The annual meeting of the above branch took place on Saturday forenoon in the Wellesley-street school. Despite the bad weather there was a very good attendance of members. The annual report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. It was agreed that the Managing Committee be requested to consider the whole question of lady teachers' salaries, special attention being given to increasing the salaries of those teachers whose certificates are not high, but whose valuable work is acknowledged, and report at the next meeting. A motion that "This branch deprecates the system now in vogue, of allowing children to pass the standards who have, failed badly in arithmetic/' provoked considerable discussion, but was Inst on a show of hands being called for. ' Consideration of the pupil teachers' regulations were left to the Managing Committee, and Mr Armstrong, with the consent of the meeting, withdrew his . motion in regard to the supply of relieving teachers. With reference to the payment of a secretary, the mover pointed out that the work entailed was now so great that the Institute could not expect any member to devote the necessary time to the duties without some remuneration. He also went on to say that those best fitted to judge as to what the salary should be were the Mauaging Committee, as they alone knew from tine to time the exact financial position of the branch. It was decided unanimously that in future the secretary should be paid, the salary to be decided from time to time by the Managing Committee. Mr Lorking's motion in regard to placing the administration of the compulsory clauses in the hands of the police instead of leaving the matter to school committees, together with another motion bearing on the change of readers, was deferred till the next quarterly meeting. * It was resolved, seconded, and agreed to unanimously, " That this annual meeting desires to express a hearty vote of thanks to the executive for their valuable services to the cause of education generally, and of the branch in particular, during the past 12 months."
