TO MY GREAT GRIEF, I FIND THERE IS NO EVOLUTION IN MAN.

TO THE EDITOR. Sin,— Sixty years ago,, when I heard of the Ayrshire Leveller, who believed that all wealth should be divided, but afterwards, when he owned a " coo " and became conservative, did give me great thought. I take it that the great feature in evolution is that it would so progress man ttaat he would see beyond his own nose. To my disappointment, man is now no further advanced in that respect than the Ayrshire man was,i sixty years ago. Mr William Bruce, the County Councillor for the Riding in which I reside, wished the Raglan County Council to give their advertisements to the Auckland Star. Now, there was no one in our district, up and down our side for fifteen, perhaps thirty, miles but himself gets the Star, so that, to gratify his owu absurdity, he was Wishing to waste the taxpayers' money, with the effect that no one but himself would know that contracts and other Connty business were advertised, and, consequently, unless to himself, all such contracts and other county notice of various kinds would be unknown, which practically would be the same as no advertising at all. This shows that Mr Bruce is no further evolved than the I Ayrshire man was sixty years ago. Mr Bruce is an extreme Liberal, as such he believes that the State should have the unearned increment, but like all New Zealand Liberals, lie is only so in precept, but iu practice he is as weak as a rope of sand, and whether as a Liberal or not as a Liberal he has only one object in view, and that is not to see beyond his own nose. Twenty-five years ago Mr Bruce sold his not much improved farm for £lO per acre. He (Mr Bruce) did not then believe the State should have the unearned increment, and Mr Bruce now being a tenant farmer believes the State 3hould have the increment, but by-and-bye when Mr Bruce once more becomes a freeholder, once more will he wheel about, at least I would be willing to wager a shilling to a penny that he will.—l am, etc, HAKAI'EI'E.
