CHILD MURDERED.
(I)Y TELEGRAPH--PRESS ASSOCIATION). Auckland, Last Night. A little girl three years old was murdered on Saturday at Rakanwahi, near Kaikohe. Her throat was cut with a knife, and the wound afterwards hacked with a tomahawk. The child's mother, Amy Stewart, kas been arrested for the murder. Trouble and poverty are supposed to have completely unhinged the mother's mind. Later. Mrs Amy Stewart, who is charged with the murder of her three-year-old daughter, near Kaikohe, is aged 22, and is a daughter of Mr Thomas Baldwin, of Rakanwahi. She cut the child's throat first with a knife, afterwards severing the windpipe with a tomahawk. The tragedy occurred on Saturday evening. The woman has been brought into Kaikohe by Constable Keep. The. child's body was brought in to-day for the inquest. The husband, who is an old man, was sent to the Auckland hospital last week, and is not likely to recover. This fact evidently pieyed on the woman's mind. The family have also suffered extreme poverty.
