ARBOR DAY.

CEREMONY AT CENTRAL SCHOOL. The Arbor Day ceremony at Central School was held on Friday afternoon. The children of Stds. 1 to Form 11. were assembled in the recreation ground just prior to the planting and were- addressed by 'the headmaster (Mr. E. G. Coddington) on tree planting and the value of trees to mankind. Nola Billington recited:— “I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree.”

The headmaster eemarked that among the things that gave him great pleasure was the knowledge that, growing in different parts of New Zealand, were fine trees that he had planted. He reminded the pupils that the beautiful Wellingtonia growing in the school grounds and now a landmark, had been planted as a small tree many years ago by the late Mr. J. C. Boddington, when chairman of the School Committee.

The boys of Std. 5 then proceeded to plant a number of sequoias that had been grown from seed in the school nursery.
