POSITION IN LOWER VALLEY. SOME IMPORTANT WOiRKH' PBCXFOSED. Interesting references to the flood position in the South Wairarapa were znad» by witnesses during the taking of evidence in the hearing at Featherston on' Wednesday of a petition by a number of Pnkio andiKaftatara settlers for the exclusion of their lands from the South Wairarapa River Board’s area. An indication of the important works proposed by the 1 board was given by its engineer, Mr. H. F. Toogood. Mr. Ronald Hiko McMaster, of Tuihitarata, said he had for some years 'studied the.effbet of floods especially after the sub-division of Tohitarata i property partly owned by him. At the end of the first' dairy season after the subdivision of Tnhitarata they had a serious flood and this stopped dairying altogether. This- was In May, 1923, before the Kahutara stopbank had been completed at'their end. This flood was _ due to silting of the river. They,-then made enquiries' and discovered ■ the trouble the Turanganui River was causing and also the blockage of flood water by the country road aerose the Geo. Hume estate;.
