DUTY ON RADIOS.
LANDING CHARGES EXCEED 100 PER CENT. SCALING DOWN REQUESTED. AUCKLAND, August 29. The elimination of the existing duty of 10 per cent, on British atid Australian radio sets, and reduction of the duty on foreign sets from 42 to 20 per cent., was asked by Mr. W. J. Truscott, director of Spedding, Ltd., in evidence before the Tariff Commission today. ’He contended that the assembling industry in New Zealand was uneconomic- The present landing charges on imported sets exceeded 100 per cent., he asserted. Assembling was a blind-alley occupation for youths who •were paid less than Australians doing the same work. Mr. Truscott agreed with Professor Murphy that a reasonable revenue duty would be appropriate, and there should be an exise duty of 20 per cent. The witness also asked for the abolition of the duty of 65 per cent, on British refrigerators ,and reduction of the duty on foreign from 140 to 20 per cent. —(P.A.)
