OBITUARY.

MR. HUGH MACKAY. The many friends in the Wairarapa and elsewhere of Mr. Hugh Mackay will regret to hear of his death, which occurred at his residence, “Haerewai” Renal! Street, Mastertdn, at 1 p.m. yesterday, after an illness extending over several months. The late Mr. Mackay, who was 70 years of age, was well known throughout the district and was held in high respect by all who knew him. He was born in Christchurch, his father being the late Mr. David Mitehell Maekay, of Ross-shire, Scotland, and his mother was a sister of the late Mr. John Morrison, of Blairlogie. The late Mr. Mackay was educated at Mr. Ross’s Private School for Boys and first came to Masterton w-hen he was a youth. He started work as a member of the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, being associated for a short period with the Masterton and also the Featherston branches. On account of health reasons he gave up commercial life for outdoor pursuits and for a considerable period was engaged on Mr. F. Moore’s Glenburu Station and later at Mr. F. Hale’s Flat Point Station. Mr. Mackay gained extensive fanning experience and subsequently took over the managership cf lie Tully Estate property at Tablelands, Martinborough. Mr. Maekay then conducted a livery stables in Martinborough. Disposing of this business he again took up farming, first at Limehills, Makuri and later at Makomako. About ten years ago he came to Masterton and was employed until a year or two ago, on the staff of Messrs G. H. Perry and Co. He was a prominent Freemason, being a Past Master of Lodge Waihenga, Martinborough, of which he was a member at the time of his death. Mr. Maekay was also a keen bowler and was a well-known member of the Masterton Club. He took a keen interest in Rugby, being a player in his younger days. The late Mr. Maekay married Miss Catherine Bunny, of Ahiakouka. The sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to Mrs Mackay and to the other relatives in their great loss. Mrs W. Andrew and Miss Maekay, of Masterton, are sisters and Mr. W. M. Stewart, also of Masterton, is a half-brother.

The funeral, which will be a Masonic one, will take place to-morrow (Wednesday) leaving the residence, Benall Street, at 2.30 p.m. and arriving at the Greytown Cemetery at 3.30 p.m.
