The payment of old age, war and family allowance pensions usually payable on December 23 and 25 will be made on or after December 21 (tomorrow).

The Carterton Tradesmen's Association notify that the half holiday in Carterton will be observed this week on Thursday. The long night for Christmas Eve will be observed on Saturday, December 24.

On attempting a landing at Queenstown on Saturday in a Moth aeroplane Angus Macintosh crashed. The aeroplane was fairly extensive damaged, but the pilot-owner and passenger escaped almost uninjured.—‘(P.A.)

The Carterton Football Club has decided to take its appeal against the senior championship final being awarded to the Bed Star Club, to the English Bugby Union, .and the appeal ihas, together with all the evidence, been forwarded to the proper quarter.

An inquest ebneerning the death of Allan Ashley Benge, who was found hanged at Mr. J. A. Toogood's station “Ngaiana” on Sunday, was held at Homewood yesterday. The District Coroner, Mr. B. G. Eton, presided. The evidence showed that the young man was quite happy and contented in his surroundings although mentally a little below normal. A verdict that deceased committed suicide by hanging while mentally deranged was returned. Just after midday on Sunday, a Dunedin Press Association message states, the White Star aeroplane ‘No. 2 just escaped destruction by fire while standing at the Taieri aerodrome. Fortunately a staff member noted smoke coming from tho pilot’s cockpit and found that the pilot’s helmet and cushion were on fire. He quickly extinguished the blaze. It is considered that the sun’s rays, focused by the lenses of the goggles left in the coekpit, were the cause of the fire.

The Oddfellows Lodge (Manchester Unity) will hold its annual picnic at Payton’s Bush on Boxing Day, Monday next. Members and friends and juvenile members and their parents are invited to attend and are assured of a pleasant day’s outing. A varied programme will be provided for young and old and milk and hot water will be supplied free. A bus will leave the Lodge room at intervals from 9 a.m. but the Lodge cannot make arrangements for all transport.

The Masterton Post Office will be closed in all branches on Christmas Day (Sunday) and Boxing Day (Monday). The telegraph office hours on Sunday will be 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on Monday 9 a.m. to noon and 7 p.m. to midnight. Private bags for Castlepoint, Homewood, Stronvar, and Te Wharau, usually despatched on Mondays, will be sent on Tuesday next.
