FACTORY MANAGERS.
TWO ASSOCIATIONS IN EXISTENCE. UNUSAL CIRCUMSTANCES. PALMERSTON N., August 26. An unusual set of circumstances was revealed when the Conciliation Council met in Palmerston North to-day to consider an application by the Wellington -Dairy Factory Managers' Industrial Union of Workers for an increase in wages and other improvements in the present working conditions. The union workers were represented by Messr*. C. (rough, J. A. Brooking and E. McEiierly, while Mr. R. Fulton (New Plymouth) appeared as agent. The employers weie represented by Messrs. J. W. Rodden and P. J. Small. The p vc lings were taken in committee and at the conclusion, the Commissioner (Mr. P. Hally) intimated that unusual circumstances had prevented anything being accomplished. From the statements made it appears that two associations of managers arc in existence. Firstly, there is a union of association under the Act, and who elaimed that the majority of the managers had been enrolled as members of their particular organisation. On the other hand, there is a section of managers who had banded themselves together, but who did not claim to have i any registration. Nevertheless, they too, claimed the major portion of managers within their fold. As the lastmentioned organisation proposed to meet on Monday next to consider their position, the proceedings were adjourned in hopes that an amalgamation of the two sections would be brought about. Should that hope not eventuate, then it will be necessary to refer the position to the Court of Arbitration for advice as to whether an award should be made or otherwise. Bhould the Court determine in the affirmative, then* the parties will be ealled together again and an endeavour made to ararnge the matter as provided by the Arbitration Act.—(P.A.)
