EMPIRE TRADE.

POSSIBILITIES OF PROTECTION AND PREFERENCE. LACK OF CO-ORDINATING MACHINERY. A SUGGESTED CONFERENCE. United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received Tuesday, 7 p.m.) LONDON, July 2. Returning to the subject of Empire and. United States tariffs, the “Morning Post” editorially says: “If there is anything to be done it can only be by the development of a protective preferential system which the Empire already possesses in embryo.” A bewildering array of societies concerned directly and indirectly in Empire trade are described by a writer in the “Morning Post,” who found from a conversation with high Dominion officials that there was absolutely no co-ordinating machinery directing all this conflicting and often inter-cancel-ling effort into fruitful and productive channels. The writer found that there was a wide demand for a conference of Empire business men, entirely free from political influence. It should be held before the next Imperial Conference. —(Australian Press Association.)
