STORY OF RESCUE.

FINDING OF SPANISH AIRMEN. SEEN BY R.A.F. FLYER. SPAIN EXPRESSES GRATITUDE. RUGBY, July 1. The Spanish Ambassador In London, the Marquis de Merry del Vai, to-day called on the Foreign Secretary, Mr. Arthur Henderson, to express officially the thanks of the Spanish Government for the assistance rendered by the British aircraft carrier, H.M.S. Eagle, to Major Franco and the other Spanish airmen rescued near the Azores. It is understood that their seaplane, was first sighted by the Royal Air Force officer, Flight-Lieut. Lewin, who, with others, had made flights from the Eagle over a wide expanse. According to the Press, the pilot and observer in a Bison flight reconnaissance machine had scoured the seas for a wide area until the supply of fuel was nearly exhausted. They were returning to the Eagle when a floating object was sighted. The visibility was poor, but on flying down to inspect, the English airmen could see their Spanish colleagues waving to them. The Eagle was immediately informed, and raced to the spot and, after picking up the aeroplane and crew, was able to report all safe.—(British Official Wireless.) AT GIBRALTAR. AIRCRAFT CARRIER ARRIVES. (Received Tuesday, 10.45 p.m.) LONDON, July 2. The aircraft carrier Eagle has arrived at Gibraltar. Great throngs of Spaniards and British extended greetings to the rescued airmen.—(Australian Press Association.)
