WHEAT QUESTION.

GROWERS AND MILLERS. AGREEMENTS REACHED. CHRISTCHURCH, April 21. At a private conference on the wheat question, held last night, a number of important resolutions in connection with the problem were carried unanimously. Mr W. Alachin, as chairman, of the Wheat Committee, presided, and there were present nine prominent millers and nine farmers, representing the farmers’ unions of North, South and mid-Canterbury. The resolutions carried were:— “That it is desirable that some scheme be devised for the purpose of helping the wheat growing industry at the present time.” “That the basic price to be paid by the millers to the wheat growers for Tuscan be 6s f.0.b., this being based on flour at £l7 per ton, f.0.b.; brans £6 per ton f.o. b; pollard, £8 per ton, f.o.b; less the usual discounts, this agreed price for wheat to be varied in accordance with, the fluctuations of the prices of flour, bran, and pollard.” “That against this 6s, or whatever price is eventually determined by the average prices of flour, bran and pollard, between the present time and December 31, 1927, an advance of 5s 3d per bushel be made against all Tuscan wheat purchased, and that the settling date for the balance be December 31, 1927, when it is known what has been the average price for the period of the wheat products named.” “That a committee be-set up to deal with the details of the scheme, and to press* on the Government the necessity for the carrying out of the Prime Minister’s promise to deal with the situation should it be found that a largo quantity of Australian flour is being imported, or is likely to be imported.” ~(P.A.)
