OPIUM AND DRINK.
AD VENTUBES OF SHIP’S COOK. AUCKLAND, April 21. John Boys, who was assaulted on Wednesday week at Mangere, by two men, and was arrested with them, pleaded guilty at Onchunga this morning to being in unlawful possession of opium and was fined £3O or a month’s imprisonment. Four tins were forfeited to the Customs, and the Bench declined a request for time to* get the fine from his home at Wellington. Lawrence Nacey and Roy Morris were charged with assaulting John Boys. The victim said that he was a cook on the Marama, and on Wednesday week, Nacey, an old shipmate, boarded the steamer and asked about some opium. Boys made inquiries and later met Nacey and hiorris, who stated that they could find a buyer for four tins of opium he brought ashore from another All three proceeded to One hunga, where Boys, after some drinking, was knocked down by Nacey and kicked by him as well as Morris. The latter endeavoured to decamp with a suitcase, and. in the struggle the handle came off and Morris ran away. In response to cries for help, strangers came to Boys’s assistance, and Morris and brought him back. Both accused said that if he said anything about the assault they would inform the police that be had opium in a suitcase. In the meantime the police had been summoned and arrested the three.—(P.AJ
