COAST SETTLER’S DEATH.

BODY FOUND AT WHAKATAKI MB. GEORGE H. INNES. A message came through to the Masterton police last evening that, Mr Gcorge Harding Innes, a well-known settler, had been found dead at 7.30 at the rear of the Whakataki Hall by Mr Christensen, licensee of the Marine Hotel at Whakataki. It seemed that Mr Innes had been dead about 24 hours.

Enquiries by “The Age” last evening elicited the iinormation that Mr Innes went out to Castlepoint on Saturday, came into Masterton on Sunday and went out to Castlepoint again on Monday night. He had been ailing for some months, and only a short time ago was in the doctor’s hands. There is no definite information as to the cause of death.

Deceased was a highly-esteemed resident of the Tinui and Castlepoint district, where he has resided, off and on, for very many years. He was about 60 years of age, and at the time of his death was residing at Castlepoint. He worked on lca station years ago and then moved to South Wairarapa. Later, he came back, and, in partnership with Mr George Pain, of Martinborough, he managed Te Mai station. After this, he bought a farm at Whakataki, which he recently sold to his eldest son, Mr Jack Innes, and Mr Bruce Harvey. Mr Innes represented his part of the district on the Castlepoint County Council practically since the Council’s inception, and was twice chairman, a position held by him when he resigned from the Council in March. He has also been chairman of the Castlepoint School Committee, and assisted much towards obtaining the Tinui war memorial. The chairmanship of the Tinui Patriotic Association was also held by the deceased. Mr Innes married a daughter of Mr George Pain (Martinborough) about 26 years ago. To his widow and 7 children, the youngest of whom is about 5 years old, much sympathy will be extended. The children include Mr Jack Innes, the well-known footballer, Miss Dorothy Innes, a school teacher, Miss L. Innes, postmistress at Castlepoint, one boy at the Wairarapa High School, and the younger ones at Castlepoint.
