One cannot blink liis eyes to the fad, ami if is useless (o attempt to conceal the truth or to endeavour (o Croat a false impression. In every country in the world there is poverty and unemployment, which is the natural .aftermath of a greaf upheaval. New Zealand, being an exporting country, has suffered less than any other part of the British Empire as a result of the war, but ihe collapse of the markets has produced a sharp reverse, and \vc are now up against it in desperate realitv. But wc -have immense resources and recuperative powers, and if everybody will get down to it und do his best, wc shall make a speedy recovery. While the people should be made to realise the seriousness of ihe crisis, paiiic-niongering and pessimism should not be. countenanced.
