STATE CONTROL.

The people of New Zealand at the recent poll showed 110 desire to place the Trade under State control. They do not appear to have appreciated tno fact that half a loaf is better than no bread. They were dissuaded from voting for State control by the Trade on the ono hand ' and by the Prohibitionists on the other. The position ia most unfortunate from the point of view of the person who desires to see reform without an undue interference with personal liberty. However, as the great majority have been influenced by partisan considerations, there is no alternative, in the event of Continuance being carried, than for the Legislative to wipe out Stat© Control from the ballot paper, and to submit the two issues at the next referendum, viz., Prohibition and Continuance. The issues will, henceforth, have to be decided without an alternative.
