THE LOAN PROPOSALS.
The ratepayers of Masterton have sanctioned the proposal to raise a loan for. the extension of the gasworks, ■which is a paying proposition, but have refused to endorse the proposal to borrow money for street improvements and river protection. The failure of the street loan was anticipated as soon as the Council combined two separate proposals. The work of connecting Queen and Chapel Streets has nothing to do with the constructing of outside thproughfares. The new street, which is admittedly required, will have to be put through on its own merits, or not at all. It is to be regretted that. tnc proposal to raise a small loan for protecting the borough* against the incursions of the Waipoua Rivej should have been rejected. The ratepayers may discover that, they have pursued a penny wise and pound foolish policy in this matter.
The premises of Messrs Graham & Co., Queen Street, will be closed from 12 noon to 3 p.m. to-day owing to the death of Msu. J, Graham.*
