THE LIBERAL PARTY.
It cannot be denied that the Liberal Party sustained a crushing defeat at the elections on Wednesday. It lost such old and tried supporters as Sir Joseph Ward, Sir James Carroll, and Mr. G. W. Eussell, all of whom have played an active part in the adminisi tration of the affairs of the country. It is, perhaps, a little early to discuss what will become of the remnant of the party, and who will be selected as leader. There are only two whose names stand < out prominently, and these are Mr. Thomas Wilford and Mr. W. D. S# Macdonald. But there seems to be no good reason why the Liberals should not combine with t^ie Keformers, and'consolidate their forces against the natural opposition, which' is the extreme Labour Party. The tri-party system will be found very inconvenient for all concerned.
