THE LIQUOR POLL.
Although the final results will not be known for several days, the indication at the moment points to New Zealand having taken the great plunge, and decided upon an era of* National Prohibition. .Whether or not the verdict is sustained, it cannot be disputed that approximately one-half the people have exercised their right to deprive the other half of an oldestablished privilege. Tho Parliament; has decided that this is democratic, and whatever our individual opinions may be, we must bow to the will of the majority. The position would have been much more satisfactory had a substantial majority been disclosed. In the circumstances, if it should happen that Prohibition is carried by a narrow margin—and it seems unlikely to so happen—Parliament would be morally bound to provide legislation for a further reference* 1 of the issue to the doctors at the earliest opportunity.
