THE LABOUR CANDIDATE.

Mr. Alex. McLeod, who is announced as the "official Labour candid.ito'' for Masterton, opened his x campaign at Kuripuni last night. The greater portion of his address was devoted to the exposure of land and other monopolies, and one cannot but admit that ho had good ground to work upon. There was absolutely nothing in the way of construction in the whole of his speech. The meeting declared that the candidate was not an extremist. But that is scarcely the point. He is officially identified with Messrs Holland, Semple and Co., and he must stand or fall by their policies. They are out for the nationalisation of almost everything. They are dangerous reactionaries, who failed to stand by the Dominion in the hour of its direst peril. Mr. McLeod, as a citizen, may be an estimable fellow. He may be a useful Borough Councillor. But, so long as he identifies himself with a party that stands for destruction instead of construction, for revolution instead of evolution, so long will he fail to appeal to the sympathies of the patriotic section of the community.
