THE INDEPENDENTS.

Mr. Downie Stewart and several other members of the House of Representatives have broken away from party, and have resolved to go to the electors and ask for a free hand to support whatever party or legislation they may consider is in the best interests of the country. Mr. Downie Stewart pointed out at Dimeciin on Tuesday night that the present fight between Liberals and Reformers was ridiculous. He hoped that the Independents would be in a position to bring about a strong, progressive Administration, embodying the best elements of the Reform and Liberal Parties, and a strong section of moderate Labour. This is the Administration which the Dominion is seeking. It wants the strongest men in the Administration, no matter from what side in the House they may come. To those who are making the election a fight between Wardism and Masseyism a large section of the community is prone to exclaim, "A plague on both you* houses."
