THE CUSTOMS TARIFF.
It is satisfactory to learn, on the authority of the Minister of Finance, t'hat the Government proposes this session revising the Customs tariff. In view of this announcement, it is desirable that the new schedule be brought down as speedily as possible, so that trade will not be unnecessarily disturbed. It" may be taken for granted that the Government will make important remissions in the duty on necessaries of life and those goods that are essential to the development of the country. On the other hand, it may he expected that substantial increases will be made in the duty on foreign-made articles and luxuries. The attitude of the Opposition in the matter of tariff revision is intensely humorous. It pretends to be very anxious to see concessions® made that will reduce the cost of living. 1 But when it was in power, the most important concession it made was in respect to motor cars. And this is the good "Liberal" Government!
