FRUIT AND FISH.
From the annual statement of the Minister of Railways, it would appear that the comprehensive arrangements made for the through bodking of fruit and fish has not produced the results Special arrangements were made, in response to strong representations, for the conveyance of fruit from Auckland to Wellington by express train, the Department having the assurance that the traffic would amount to about five tons per day. In actual practice it did not amount to scwt. Similar experience followed the efforts to foster the fish industry ana meet the requests of fishermen for improved moati# of transport. The Minister says: "Consumers who deal direct with producers can obtain the benefits of these rates, and it is a matter for surprise that they do not, under such circumstances, get into direct touch, and take advantage of tre facilities provided to enable them to save. the cost inseparable from dealing through intermediaries.''
