THE CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
The fact is borno in upon us with greater emphasis at every meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board that this body, as at present constituted, is cumbrous and unwieldy. Eighteen members have been olected through a -scattered district to transact business that could be more effectively and economically performed by one half tho number. The' Legislature lia®-bean tinkering with local body work during the last few years, and* has succeeded in mak- | iog jan unholy mess of things. The | cost' of local government to-day is just J about double what it should be, and 1 it isj unhappily, increasing every year. J If the Reform Government will -set to ' work in earnest to place matters upon ' a more satisfactory footing it may succeed in doing some tangible service for the country.
