Tuesday. This morning some 4,000 sheep, occupying about 57 trucks, were sent away from the local railway station to Wellington. They came from Mr J. Strang's property, Glenside, Gladstone. An interim payment of £1753 5s 5d for the oast month has been made by the Dalefield Co-operative Dairy Company. The Taratahi Company has paid out £1,037 14s lOd, which includes in both instances advances on back supplies from the beginning of the season. The caterpillar plague is reported to be bad in the Waihakeke district. Mr John Brown presided at a meeting of the local School Committee last night, when a surplus of £2 8s 9d was reported from the picnic. It was decided to donate the same to the piano fund. The headmaster reported that there were 39 on the secondary roll, the average attendance for the fortnight being 34. There were 271 on the primary, with an average of 238 for the fortI night. The number on the roll of the ! secondary department is sufficient to i secure the services of two special J assistants for the whole of this year. ! Pupils from the secondary classes ! were very successful in the public ex- ! aminations at the end of last year. :It was decided to recommend the ; Board to effect alterations to Standard 11. room. Mr W. P. James, S.M., presided at a sitting of the Magistrate's Court to-day, when two motorists were each fined 10s and costs 7s for ridiiig their machines without lights. Deputy-Band-master Madsen and Corporal Spooner were awarded Dr. Johnston's prizes far attendance, the former obtaining the possible 56, and the latter 53.
