The flags st the flagstaff and the fire brigade tower were hung at halfmast to-day as a token of sympathy for the unfortunate victims of the sad shipping disaster. Many of the deceased were well-known in this district. Miss Doran was for some time housemaid at the Rutland Hotel, and only left at Christmas time, and Mrs Jacobs, stewardess, whose bravery has been referred to, was a sister of Mrs Stevens, and aunt to Mrs Murray, both of Scarborough, and her daughter, Miss Jacobs, was on a holiday visit here. The Pahiat.ua District Band will hold an open air concert in Mr D. Crewe's grounds, kindly lent for the occasion, on Wednesday, March 24th, at 8 p.m. Mr S. Gird wood will run drags to Woodville to-morrrovv and Thursday at 10.30 a.m. for the convenience of Pabiatua residents wishing to attend the Woodville races. The annual picnic of the Ngatur l . School will be held on Friday next. : At the monthly meetit.g of the Pahiatua District High School Committee, last evening, it was decided to communicate with the Education Board on the matter of metalling the grounds. The second meeting of the Kumeroa Racing Club will be held in Mr A. Thompson's paddock at Kumeroa on Wednesday, March 3rd. Seven races are on the programme, the principal event being the Kumeroa Cup. At a meeting of the Mangatainoka library Committee it was decided to obtain estimates for enlarging the Library Hall. Captain C. Benton and Riflemen Keebell, W. A. Algie, P. G. Wilton and W. Algie, of the Alfredton Rifle Club, will compete at the Trentham meeting, commencing on March 4th. Some of these riflemen will also take part at the Greytown meeting on March Ist.
The weather has again cleared up beautifully fine, and the postponed Konini picnic was held to-day at Mr George Gregory's property. Some splendid books were given the older pupils as prizes, and all the children on the ground received a prize. The headmaster, Mr W. Britland, Mr Joe Wade, secretary, and all the committee worked hard to ensure the success of the gathering. The refreshments were kindly supplied by the ladies, and to whom the committee wish to tender their sincere thanks, and also to the residents of the district for liberal donations to the prize fund. Ltd., report on their sale to-day as follows:—A good yarding of sheep showed a slight decline. Two-tooth wethers 10s lid, 4, 6 and f.m. ewes 10s to 10s 4d, f.m. ewes 5s Id to 8s 9d, 2-tooth ewes 13s lid, lambs, good 8s lOd to 10s 3d,, others 5s Id to 7s 9d, culls 2s 4d to 4s 3d, Lincoln rams 3 to 3igna. Cattle were dull of sale, not many lines changing hands. Cows realised 32s 6d to 655, heifers 455, 2H'ear heifers 355, fat heifers 555, empty heifers 345, veal calf ,7s, bulls 50s to 545. Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report on their Pahiatua sale to-day as follows:—We had a fair yarding of both sheep and cattle. We quote : Sheep: Two-tooth wethers 8s 5d to lis, 4, 6 and f.m. ewes 8s Gd. Cattle: Two-year bull 30s, bulls 26s to 30s, 20-month steers £2 2s, 2|vear steers £3, store cows £2 4s Gd, fat cows £3 7s.
