THE LAWRENCE-ROXBURGH RAILWAY.
THE CONSTRUCTIVE WORK STARTED On Thursday Mr Hally, of the Labor Department, Dunedin, arrived in Lawrence, and in conjunction -with Sergeant Beaumont and Messrs J. C. Arbuckle and Kennedy (engineer in chaige of the work) made a se'ection of 24 men from the list of local applicants for work on the railway. Those who had families dependent on them weie given first consideration. Yesterday morning the men selected assembled at the Survey Office, where they were made conversant with the conditions under which they were engaged and formed into gtings of six. Having been supplied with the necessary tools, they proceeded to Tuapeka Flat, where, under the direction of Mr Kennedy, a start was made on three sections, commencing opposite the Empire Hotel. All the men chosen were not able to be pieselit, but all will be on the work at the beginning' of the week. The number of men employed will be considerably augmented as the work proceeds. The late of renumeration to the men is lOd per yard and, judging by the material to be shifted, they should earn very fair wages. The section allotted to each gang is about 10 chains. As the Department have intimated that local men will have first consideration, it is advisable that those who desire employment should make early application, otherwise they may iind themselves shut out When the full complement of men has been made up from other districts.
