Wild, Alice Wix. 1 The result of the Senior Scholarship V examination is noAV public and slioavs the * positions gained by the local candidates to s be as follows :—Arthur Tyndall sth, with A - 638 marks ; Violet Pickett 11th, with 609 1 marks; and Robert Norrie 22nd, Avith 545 r marks. The first-named, being the holder 5 of a National Scholarship, Avill not be aAvarded a scholarship, but Violet Pickett will obtain one. With regard to the Junior National r Scholarships, the Education Board Junior c Scholarship, the Senior Board Scholarships I Junior free passes to Secondary Schools, I and Senior iree passes to Secondary and t Technical Schools, tilings are at present somewhat chaotic. We (Milton Minor) shall endeavor to unwind the tangle as far as we can for those Avho are not acquainted Avith the various regulations governing these examinations. In former years, the Otago Education Board set their OAvn examination tests for Junior and Senior Scholarships, and just about this date or earlier the lists of Avinners appeared Avith their several marks appended, and the results Avere fin-illy . known to all concerned or unconcerned, This year the central authority, the Education Department, have taken over the Education Board's examinations and the tests for Junior National Scholarships and Junior free passes are uniform with those for Junior Education Board Scholar- i ships. While the tests for Senior Board Scholarships and for Senior free passes (including the annual test of those who hoav hold Junior National Scholarships) and for free passes in technical Schools are uniform. Up to the present the Department has supplied Junior National results with merit figures attached, and it is noAV the Avork of the Otago Board to &ort these out as follows : the three highest scorers from schools over 200 Avill take Junior National Scholarships, the highest from schools between 40 and 200 takes another, and the highest from schools under.4o takes still another. After these are settled there will still remain to the Board the duty of picking out for division amongst the same class of schools a number of Junior Board Scholarships, 10 or 12 of them. No candidate can hold both a National and a Boaid Scholarship, hence the necessity for segregation as we have set forth. Now as to the Senior Scholarships, a similar- state of affairs exists, but in this case there are not yet any Senior National Scholarships to allot. Out of the list supplied, ivhen the merit figures are known, the Board will allot 10 or 12 Senior Board Scholarships. But these will not include present holders of Junior National Scholarships who also entered for the test to prove that they are keeping up to the mark as by regulation compelled. Finally, after all, scholarships of all kinds are allotted, there are as per published list the remainder entitled to Junior and Senior free places in District High, High, and Technical Schools.
