LAWRENCE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Lawrence Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Monday evening ; present— His Worship the Mayor (Mr B. W. W4nn), and Crs Thompson, Miller, Pilling, Stokes, Blair and Jeffery. There was no inward or outward correspondence INSPECTOR OF WORKS* REPORT. The Inspector of Works reported as follows .—I have the honor to reports that the 108 cubic yards of metal ordered has arrived and has been distributed on tbe Beaumont Road -fronting block 44, a distance of ten chains, also in White-haven-street fronting blocks 5, 7, and 11, a distance of 20 chains. The repairs effected will, I think, keep the streets in fair order during the summer months. Tbe surfacemen have also been engaged in forming a footpath in Douglas-street fronting block 21, a distance of five ohains, and attended to repairs on the footpath in Sowerby-street fronting block 39, a distance of ten chains. The following shows the state of the borough finances : — General A/o, Dr . . £582 17 0 Waterworks A/c, Dr £437 3 11 £1020 0 11 Cemetery A/c, Cc .. .. 183 11 3 Total Dr . . . . £836 9 8 I ACCOUNTS. The following accounts were passed for payment: — N.Z. Railways, £17 2s ; M. O'Gortnan, £5 18s; Logan's Point Quarry 00., £U 8s ; Andib Office, Wellington, £1 « Herbert and Co., £4 9s 9d ; Chas. Smith, £1 ss; iuteresb on loan, £25. THE LATE MR JAS. CHALMERS. Cr Tbompeon said that since last meeting of the Council a very old and respected citizen and ex-councillor bad passed away to the great majority. He referred to the late Mr Jas. Chalmers, a gentleman whom to know was to reapecb and esteem. He had been 20 years or more in tbe Council and he should say that there was no man in Lawrence wbo did more credit to the Council or to the Mayoral chair, of which he was for some years an occupant. He would move as a testimony of respect to the memory of their old and esteemed friend and" fellow councillor tbat the Council adjourn. Cr Pilling seconded. \

Cr Jeffery was in the fullest sympathy with the course suggested. He bad worked with tbe late Mr Chalmers as a member of tbe Goutioil and bad sat under him as Mayor and it was always a pleasure to work with him. He bad also always worked hard in the interests of the ratepayers and both the Council and the community generally owed a debt of gratitude for bis- services extending over many years. The motion for adjournment bad his entire approval. The Mayor said the motion bad bis entire sympathy. The late Mr Chalmers was mayor at the time be (his Worship) became a member of tbe Council, and be served bis apprenticeship under him. He was quite satisfied he was a gentleman who had won the respect of everyone who came in contact with him. He could only express hia sorrow at seeing one of their oldest landmarks removed from the district.

The motion was carried and the meeting then adjourned.
