WAITAHTJNA BRANCH. A speoial meeting of the Waitahuna branch of the N.Z, Farmers' Union was held on Saturday evening, the 21st instant, and was well attended. Mr B. Craig (President) occupied the chair and explained that the conference for the Otago Province would be held in Milton on the Ist October and that the meeting had been called to discuss the , rules and platform laid down by the Union. Also any new business which it mighb'be thought desirable to bring before the conference. The Chairman then placed before the meeting the objects of the Union for consideration, which were approved ot as follows : — To foster the interests of the farmers and fruitgrowers and settlers of New Zealand ; to promote the opening up and settlement of Crown and Native lauds ; to obtain cheap freights; to place the sale of produce and the purchase of material required by agriculturists on a satisfactory basis ; the Union to keep a vigilant watch on ail measures brought before the House of Representatives, and on the working of the present laws, and protest against any measure deemed injurious to its interests. Shonld measures be proposed or become law affecting the interests of the Union then the members of the Union are advised to vote only for those candidates at any election who pledge themselves to carry out the demands of tbe Union. The platform was then discussed seWatim and engaged tbe earnest attention of all present for a considerable time. One or two points were keenly discussed, especially that part of the platform, "That tbe compulsory clauses in the Land for Settlement Act should apply to Native as well as private lands." Finally the platform was approved of. Tbe President (Mr Craig) was by the unanimous wish of the meeting appointed delegate to represent the Waitahuna Branch at the Provincial Confer* ence. It was. resolved to meet on the first Saturday of each month, the first meeting to take place on the sth October. A vote of thanks to the chair closed the meeting. Mr Arthur Glass, the organising secretary of Che New Zealand Farmers' Union, reports that since leaving Otago he has formed the following branches in Canterbury ; — Timaru, Ashburton, Waimate, Dunsandel, Lees ton, Hare wood Road, Papanui, Templeton, Sheffield, Kir wee, Coalgate, Darfield, Greendale, Bangiora, Sefton, Amberley, Waikare, Cheviot. Ashburton and Timaru have about five districts each included in their branches, and will probably send four delegates to the conference for each of those two branches. The Otago and Southland conference has been definitely fixed to take place at Milton on the Ist, 2nd, and 3rd October, and will have probably between 40 and 50 delegates. Canterbury will send about the same number of delegates. The South Island has come -in very well indeed, as tbe farmers seem to feel the necessity for combination. There are several districts in Otago to visit yet, but Mr Glass will take some of them on his way down to the conference. Nelson and Marlborongh will hold one between them. Hawke's Bay will be ready in about two months. Mr Alexander Campbell has been appointed secretary, pro tern., to arrange details for the Milton Conference, and Mr Simpson for the Canterbury Conference, which takes place al Aehburtoa on the Bth and 9th October. The A shburton branch members have decided to publish the reports of their two first meetings in pamphlet form, the members themselves bearing the expense, Mr Glass was at Timaru on Saturday^ and works bia way down to Milton after visiting Otagn Central. He holds a meeting at Banfurly on Saturday week, September 28.
