FATAL DREDGE ACCIDENT.

Onr Roxburgh Correspondent writes : — An accident of a most distressing character occurred on the Teviot dredge on Monday, resulting in the death of a promising youcg fellow, Arthnr Cormack, son of Mr David Corraack, only 22 years of age. When the accident took place, which was about 5 o'clock in the morning, deceased, who was fireman on board, was on shift with John Kitto, winchman. From what T can glean of the facts it wonld appear that Kitto missed deceased fov about. 10 minutes, and on stopping the dredge to look for him found Cormack's body entangled well np the elevator, his clothes apparently having been caught in the shaft or spindle that works the elevator and rnns parallel thereto. This possibly occurred when he was engaged in oiling the machinery. His clothes were mostly torn off the body, which waa rather badly mangled. Gonatable Fouhy has reported the matter to Coroner Burgess, and it is expected that an inqnesfc will be held. Deceased was a general favorite with his ma'es, and his sad end has cast quite a gloom over the town.

Another somewhat sudden death, though principally from old age, occurred on Sunday morning in the person of Edward Toy* an old man, ayed 74, who died of inflammation of the lungs. He was unmarried, and a native of Fourlanes, Cornwall He was in fair oircumstauc6s, and leaves relatives at Kaitangata and in Cornwall.
