THE OPIUM HABIT.
Rather a remarkable petition was presented to tbe House last week. It came from Chinese in Wellington, and it was aimed against opium. The Chinese point ont that tbe quantity imported has for some years increased and it is L still increasing; that the Chinese population has decreased in the same period ; that tbe opium iB OBed chiefly by the Chinese for smoking, and that the opinm-smoking habit has increased among the Chinese population, and is extending to ike ealonial youths j thai opiam-gmokiug is most injurious and degrading, both morally and physically, to those who indulge in it, and renders them unfit for the ordinary duties of life, and that the babit is very easily acquired and every means should be taken to prevent its acquirement. They therefore pray that the Souse will pass on Act prohibiting or limiting the importation of opium, and controlling the use and sale of the drng.
