TUAPEKA MOUNTED RIFLES SPORTS.

r " "™ ' ' ' ' I A well-attended meeting of the Gamp . Sports Comrailteo was held in the ! Volunteer Hall, Lawrence, on Monday j night, when a draft programme was 1 drawn ap. The sports will be held oq ! Wednesday afternoon dnring camp . week, and, granted fine weather, the programme is such at to ensure a very large attendance of the public. It will ; consist of about 17 items of all descrip- , tions, and will include :—: — Lloyd-Lindsay Competition, for sections of four men. The men will be ! started in line, and race over a jump, ' three of them will dismount and fire , some rounds of ball ammunition (if per- . mission can be obtained) at a target, | mount again, clear another jump, dis- , monnt, fir© more volleys at another target, mount again, and take another , jump, then race home, ] Y.C. Rescue Race for individuals. In : this race the men will ride over two ( jumps to dummies, dismount and secure , their dummies, carry them in the same manner as if they were wounded men, and race home. A squad will be firing blank ammunition opposite tbe dummies. Equestrian Tug-of-war, for teams of 8 men. Horses will be ridden bare* back, and without spurs. This is a striking novelty. Section Hurdles Race, for sections of any four men over three flights of hurdles. Sections will be. required to start, jump, and finish in line* Jumping Contest, for individual horses. Walk, Trot, and Gallop. Two-mile Handioap'Trot. Six-futlong Handicap Flat Race. Night Alarm, The horses will be picketed with bridles on at a distance of about 50 yards from (he men, who will be lying down beside their saddles, partly undressed. On the alarm, the men will rise, dress, saddle up and mount, no section starting till all members are in the saddle, and gallop about a furlong to the winning post. Attack Practice, for sections of any four men. The sections will ride out a short distance, three men dismounting and firing volleys and then advancing, horses meantime supposed to be left in cover ; when " Horses up "is sounded, the man left in charge (mounted) will ride up and jump a hurdle, taking the four horses (three of them riderless) over it in line,. The same procedure will be repeated at two other hurdles. All the events are open to members of the T.M.R. only, except the Lloyd-Lind-say, Section Hurdle Race, and Attack Practice, which will be open to teams of other mounted corps. The entrance fees (if any) will be very small, and there is certain to be a large number of entries for every competition — in fact, several horses are already in training for the various events. There will also be a 100 yds race, distance race, walking race, high lonf? jump, hop, step, and jump, and hurdle race (handicaps) for pedestrian members of the corps, and a tent-pitch-ing competition, and in these (open to members of T.M.R. only)*, also, there will be good competition. It is only the draft programme that we have taken the foregoing from, and there will no doubt be alterations made at the next committee meeting (25th inst.) Tbe programme is undoubtly the most interesting and varied that has been put before the- public of Tuapeka. The prizes will likely take the form of trophies, but haVe not yet been allocated. As soon as tire" programme is fixed up it will, be grafted and distributed.
