B The minutes of the last ordinary and a special meetings were read and conl firmed, 1 CORRESfONDENCB. b From the clerk, Invercargill Borough • Council, forwarding the following reso- * lution, passed at the last meeting of that > Council, and asking the Lawrence 9 Borough Council's co-operation, if ap1 proved : — ** That, with the object of re- \ daring the annual payments of interest j by local bodies, the Government be reI quested to introduce legislation to allow > of money being borrowed by- the conu- ) , try at as low a rate as possible and t loaned to local authorities nfc a rate not exceeding 3J per cent, per anonm j sneb advances to local authorities to be made from time to time as present loans mature. Further, that this resolution be forwarded to all the Southland members of Parliament, and to every borough and County Council in New Zealand." — Cr Smyth said the object sought to be achieved by the resolution was most desirable. Were it attained, their borough (night not be able to Aonv^nny benefit from it lor some time to come, still it was a good thing for one body to assist the other wherever possible. He moved that the. Lawrence Borough Council give all the assistance it could towards having the proposal carried tbrongh Parliament, and that a copy of the request and ■ the resolution be forwarded to Mr Ben- < net, member for Tuapeka.— Cr Thorap- * son seconded the motion. He thought ' it was a move in the right direction. If the local bodies could manage to obtain their money at 3$ per CQUt. i& WOUld be I better for the country at large.— The j motion was carried unanimously. < From the Treasury Department nodi- i fying that the sum of £3 Os 6d (fees, fines i and penalties collected in the Magis- 1 trate'g Court for quarter ended 30th i Jane) had been remitted to the credit of 1 the Borough account,— Received. < From the Secretary of the Agricul- < tnral Department, asking the Council t to forward copies of any by-laws relating t to tbe payment of fees by licensees of t slaughterhouses wbioh have been hither- 1 to enforced ; also stating that 08 60.9 JQ- t ejection ot all slaughtering places is t now undertaken* by tha Agricaltural c Department it was proposed to repeal t suoh by-lawB.-r-Received c From the Acting-clerk of the Bxecu- 1 tive Council, forwarding extract from c " New Zealand Gazette " relating to the t inclusion of dock, burdock thistles, I Inpin and pennyroyal within the second schedule of the Noxious Weeds Act. — Received* WORKS. The Public Works Committee recommended that a 4-inch pipe be placed 0 across the road in Lancaster-street and the drain cleaned on inside of footpath, t also that about six loads of gravel be supplied; that tha footpath in Sowerby- t street be drained and cleaned j that 0 Douglas-afcreet footpath be formed, to a width of 6t and gravelled 4ft behind Mr _ James Oliver's place. a ACCOUNTS. v The following accounts were, on tbe f recommendation of the Finance Com- {. mil tee, passed for payment : — A.
