LEVY SUGGESTED.
Raising Funds for Wilding Park. The finances of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association for the maintenance of Wilding Park are low. At a meeting of the Edgeware Tennis Club last evening a letter was read from the association urging the necessity for the raising of funds. Suggestions from clubs for the raising of the monej’ were asked for. After discussion the matter was held over until next season. The treasurer, Mr D. M. Mcßae, stressed the importance of Wilding Park to the tennis playing community, not only of Christchurch, but of New Zealand. “ The park is the envy of other provinces and the admiration of visiting players,” said Mr Mcßae. “It is imperative that some means be found to raise the money necessary to counteract the depreciation on the grounds.” The speaker added that in his opinion an increase of the present levy of 2s 6d per annum on all members of affiliated clubs was the only method of providing a solution of the problem. Mr Williams suggested applying to the Minister cf Interna! Affairs for a substantial share in art union funds. In the North Island, he said, this was the accepted practice with tennis clubs. “ The North Island clubs that* have benefited by art unions have chiefly been in the earthquake area and have suffered considerable damage,” replied Mr Mcßae. “ However, it is intended \c. send a deputation to the Minister to see what can be done.” Mr J. Shier gave notice of motion that the present levy be made a direct charge on members of the club, as originally intended, instead of coming out of the club’s finatxes. A member suggested that it should be increased to 5s per head.
