NEARLY CHOKED.
Life-saver Tangled in Life-line. SYDNEY, January 2. A life-saver at Freshwater was nearlv drowned yesterday while attempting to rescue two men who were in difficulties more than 150 yards from the shore. The life-line became tangled around his neck, and he was nearly strangled before he freed himself. He then swam out to the men and brought them back to the beach. The two men themselves got into difficulties after assisting a young girl who was carried out by the undertow. They were unable to make progress against the strong undertow, which carried them further to sea. William Smith saw their predicament from the shore, seized a life-line, and swam to their assistance. The life-line slackened at one stage, and a wave flung the loose rope around his neck. In his efforts to free himself the rope became more tangled and he struggled frenziedlv to free himself from the line, which was slowly choking him. After loosening the rope, he rested for a few minutes to regain his strength, and then swam to the two men. They were brought ashore with little difficulty and quickly recovered.
