SERIOUS CHARGE.
Woman’s Alleged Activities in Drug Traffic. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. SHANGHAI, January 9. Sensational features are associated with the trial of Mrs Victor Johnson, wife of an Australian master mariner, who is charged with manufacturing narcotics at her residence in the heart of a most select residential district. The seriousness of the case was stressed by the prosecution, which emphasised that no fewer than 114 Chinese have recently committed in this area the similar offence of dealing in narcotics under the recently framed narcotic suppression laws. Although there is no possibility of a similar penalty on the accusea, the international aspect of the crime has arisen. The police, it was stated, discovered the plant following the outbreak of a small fire. This led to the seizure of large quantities of heroin, cocaine, opium and extensive equipment which was elaborately fitted in the attic. Mrs Johnson’s husband is now en route to England to bring out a ship for a Chinese company.
