MUSIC AT SCHOOLS.

Awards in Pianoforte Competitions. Nearly 300 primary school children from ten suburban schools took part in the annual pianoforte competitions of Miss Clarice Bell’s classes at the Jellicoe Hall last night. There was a large and appreciative audience of parents and friends and the remarkably high standard shown by the young pupils, whose ages ranged from six to thirteen years, prompted much applause. Before the concert commenced, the chairman (Mr A. E. Haynes) said that the work of Miss Bell and her associates in the school classes was of the greatest value. About twelve primary schools took advantage of the lessons and the standard of accomplishment was rising each year. Mr Haynes stressed the advisability of parents taking advantage of this opportunity to secure a musical training at small expense. The adjudicator, Mr Claude Davies, warmly praised the work of the young performers. He was particularly pleased with the standard attained by the pupils from the Elmwood School. Some of the children were naturally a little nervous and it was obvious that outside the concert hall they would show even greater proficiency. Awards were based on marks for the year’s work and the marks given by the adjudicator on the concert performance.
