Badges Are Presented to Boy Scouts. r ST STEPHEN’S TROOP. (Special to the “Star.’’) ASHBURTON, December 6. At a camp fire evening held by St Stephen’s Boy Scouts, badges and prizes won during the year were presented by the scoutmaster (Mr A. M. Meredith) as follow: King’s Scout, T.L. Chambers and P.L. Colquhoun; pathfinder, T.L. Chambers, P.L.’s Colquhoun, Moore, Suttie and Nicholls; handyman, T.L. Chambers, P.L.'s Colquhoun, Miles, Suttie, Nicholls, Seconds M’Quarters, R. Plunkett, Scouts N. Reddecliffe and E. Plunkett; fireman, T.L. Chambers and P.L. Colquhoun; cook, Seconds M’Quarters, R. Plunkett, Scout A. Meade; cyclist, Moore, Suttie, Scouts E. Stayt, N. Reddecliffe; second class, P.L.’s Suttie, Moore, Seconds M’Quarters, M’Cormick, Plunkett, Scouts Berry, Ay ton, E. Plunkett, G. Stayt and R. MCormick; tenderfoot, Scouts Dingwall, G. Stayt and G. Eyles. A prize for the best all-round scout in the troop for 1934, presented by T.L. Chambers, was awarded to Second K. M’Quarters, and Scout J. Connor was awarded Mrs G. M. B. Stayt’s special prize for the neatest boy in the troop. Lodge Meetings. The C.A. (Bro. 11. Baker) presided over a meeting of the Pride of Ashburton, Juvenile Foresters, held last evening. Two brothers were reported on the sick list and sick pay amounting to £3 was passed for payment. Seven candidates were initiated. An official visit was received from the District Executive. The D.C.R. (Bro. Smith) congratulated the Court on its progressiveness. For introducing the most candidates during the year Bro. Rollinson, J.W., was presented with a pocket knife by Bro. Smith. It was announced that the annual picnic would be held at Ashton Beach on Saturday, December 15. Donations of £1 Is toward the picnic fund were received from the District Executive and from Court Ashburton, members of v-hich were given an invitation to attend. Schools Essay Competition. The following awards have been made in the schools essay competition in connection with the recent Ashburton Show: Secondary schctol—H. Baigent (High School) 1; E. D. Chambers (High School) 2, J. Shaw (High School) 3. Primary Schools —Jean Lill (Greenstreet) 1, Marion Fawcett (Greenstreet) 2, Rosemary Hunt (Greenstreet) 3. There were six entries in the secondary class and three in the primary competition. Junior Women’s Institute. The Junior Group of the Ashburton Women’s Institute met last evening, Miss E. Collison, president, being in the chair. A letter was received from Miss E. J. Watt thanking members for the gift of knitted articles made and forwarded by them. Community singing of Christmas Carols was enjoyed by all present. There were several entries for the competition—Christmas novelty—to cast no more than Is 6d. The judge Miss Collison, awarded the prizes as follows: Miss Mai Willers 1, Misses Dorothy Breeze and Miss Betty Sutton (equal) 2, Miss Florrie Hardy 3. Personal. Dr R. B. Watson and Mrs Watson, Invercargill, are at present on a visit to the Rev R. S. Watson, of Ashburton. Dr Watson will sail for England by the Rangitane, on December 21. Troop-leaders D. Choate and C. Chambers and Patrol-leader G. Suttie, of St Stephen’s Troop of Boy Scouts, will leave Ashburton on Wednesday next for the Centenary Scout Jamboree, which will be held in Melbourne from December 27 to January 13.
