101 AND “NOT OUT.”
Hastings Resident Receives Congratulations.
It is not given to many to attain the wonderful age of 101 years—to be 101 and “ not out,” is a very flue thing when a person appears so well and bright as was Mrs Adamson, of Hastings, last week, when she received the congratulations of many friends, says the Wellington “ Evening Post.” A large table was spread with beautiful flowers sent to her, and she received many telegrams from friends in other parts, as well as the attentions from those about her. While admiring her flowers, Mrs Adamson gently remarked, “ Gardening is now getting a little past me.” This wonderful old lady was wearing a frock she had possessed when she was only thirty years of age. one which showed the care that had been taken of it. and she joked with her guests about the fact that her hair did not turn grey. In making a presentation from the Presbyterian congregation, the Rev D. J. A. Shaw told Mrs Adamson that she was known all over the world on account of her flights by air, which had been such a pleasure to her.
The birthday cake, which had been made by Mrs George Tripe, had 101 candles, and in the darkened room looked most effective.
In replying to the many congratulations and kind things which had been said, Mrs Tames Adamson said that her long life had been characterised by kindly actions.
The Mayor of Hastings (Mr G. A. Maddison) made a formal call on Mrs Adamson in the afternoon, and tendered the congratulations of the people of the town, speaking again of her outstanding industry, and her integrity of life. Altogether the day was a memorable and happy one for the birthday celebrant. Mrs Adamson was born in Ilobart, and has been ninety-nine years in New Zealand, having come with her parents. Mr and Mrs Thomas Anderson, of Hokianga, in 1835.
