Motor-Cycle Club’s Sports. (Special to the ‘-star.") ASHBURTON. October 1. The Ashburton Motor-cycle Club held its opening run on Sunday to the farm • of the club's patron, Mr 11. Brown (Seaview). In addition to about thirty motor-cyclists several attended the run I in motor-cars. A programme of events was held, the results being as follows: Serpentine Race—T. 11. Farley 1, S. j White 2. S. The Ashburton High School gymnastic championships were held last week. The results were as follow: —Senior: Peggy Brand 1, Jean Jary 2; junior, Miriel Woods 1, Jean M’Dowell 2. The class was carried on during the winter months under the tuition of Miss B. Millichamp, and the efficiency of the work was amply demonstrated at the final display. Personal. Mr A. T. Smith (chief instructor in woodwork at the Ashburton Technical High School) resumed duty to-day after an absence of three weeks on sick leave. Mr R. Saunderson left Ashburton today to join the telegraph staff at the Masterton Post Office. lie was presented with a leather pocket wallet by members of the Baring Square Methodist senior Young Men's Bible Class on Sunday, the presentation being made by the leader (Mr W. C. Bishop). Ashburton Borough Council. (Special to the " Star.*') ASHBURTON, October 1. The Ashburton Borough Council met to-night, the Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods) presiding. Councillors W. 11. Rundle, F. J. E. Smallbone, J. Connor. E. Buchanan, A. L. Jones, 11. R. C. M'Elrea, J. T. Pratley, E. H. Orr, W. H. Robinson and R. Kerr were also present. It was reported that the receipts since the previous meeting had totalled £645 7s 2d, the principal amounts being: Rates £2Ol 19s 3d. rents £2B 13s, extraordinary water supply £Ol 17s 2d. abattoir fees £lB 14s 2d, licenses £94 16s lOd. The unsatisfactory working of the borough septic tank was commented upon in a letter from Dr T. F. Telford. Medical Officer of Health. He stated that Senior Inspector Huggins, who inspected the tank, had said he found it to be in a very unsatisfactory condition. The tank was not functioning properly. Dr Telford asked the council to improve matters immediately by cleaning out the tank and to give serious consideration to measures to prevent a recurrence of what could be a serious menace. The letter was referred to the drainage committee for a report.
