Six Cows Killed by Live Power Line. RIVER ELECTRIFIED. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, October 1 Six valuable cows were killed a°d Mr J. Hughes, who was driving a herd of a hundred, had a narrow escape when the herd came in cpptact with a i fallen power cable at Okato early this morning. Mr Hughes saw one cow i fall ami bent down to raise its head, thinking it had been poisoned with tutu. He then saw a broken cable | coded underneath the cow. Probably the fact that he was wearing gumboots saved his life. The main body of the i herd went along a by-path, but two | tried .to ford a nearby river. In the r water they came into contact with the 1 broken cable and were killed instantlyFour other cows were knocked down as they came on to the road and died some minutes later. In the stream ; twenty eels and some trout were killed. Mr Hughes bad great difficulty in keeping the rest of the herd away from the 1 dead cows. One cow did manage to muzzle a carcase and was itself killed.
