A.J.C. METROPOLITAN. New Zealand-bred horses have on many occasions played leading parts in the Metropolitan Handicap, which yesterday was won by the Limond four-year-old Waikare. with Nightly (by Night Raid) in third place. In 1884, exactly fifty years ago. Sir Modred, one of the best of the good horses sired by Traducer, won the race for Mr D. Proudfoot, who was a pioneer in tramway construction in New Zealand. Cravat, who won in IS9B. was bred in Auckland, being bv Castor from Necklace, a Musket mare from Locket, several of whose progeny, including Thunderbolt. Necklet and Medallion, had successful stud careers in Australia. Maniapoto, bv Soult, won in 1905. This was the big New “■Zealand meeting, but the success of Maniapoto came as a surprise He failed badly on the first day in the Epsom Handicap, for which he was a pronounced favourite, and he was at a long price when he showed his real form to win the Metropolitan. A year later the winner was the Soult mare Solution, who was a hot favourite. After a long interval. Star Stranger, by Martian, won in 1926. While horses from the Dominion have won this race several times, there was a period when exasperating fortune attended their efforts. Five years in succession. New Zealand owners provided the second horse. When Murillc won a yeai after Star Stranger, second place was filled by the great Limond gelding Limerick. In the following year Jocelyn won by half a length from the Kilbronev mare Oratrix. who came back to the 1 Dominion to win the New Zealand Cup. Loquacious scored in 1929 byhalf a length from the Night Raid horse N’ightmarch, whose weight had been increased to 9.12 by a penal tv for Ins Epsom win on the first day. Craglord was the next winner and again the runner-up. In the Shade, was owned in New Zealand, though bred in Australia. Strength won in 19751 by I *nlv a head from Concentrate. who .carried the same colours as his sister, Oratrix, had done three years earlier.
