SHORTAGE OF BOYS

Recruiting for New Zealand Navy. Pet Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 25. The Naval Secretary states that some difficulty has been experienced of late in obtaining the required number of boys between the ages of 154 and 164 years, though recruitings for ratings entered at a later age (over 18) are entirely satisfactory. It is not easy to appreciate why the shortage in the younger class exists and the question will be further examined as soon as it is possible to gauge the effect of the recent modifications in the recruiting arrangements. Boys are usually entered half-yearly and candidates for the engine room branch once a year, the total annual requirements being about 45 ratings, including candidates recruited from time to time for miscellaneous and smaller branches. The standard of education on entry corresponds to that required for the sixth standard proficiency certificate.
