PROVISION OF MEAT.
Arranged by Brighton Unemployed. A meeting of the New Brighton branch of the Canterbury Unemployed Workers’ Association was held in the Pier Hall last night. The president (Mr H. Burnand) presided, and the following committee members were present:— Messrs D. Davidson, A. Burgess (vicepresident) and W. D. Kennedy (secretary) and Mrs G. Brunton It was explained that the Mayor’s grant of £l2 10s would be used for the purchase* of two carcases of prime beef. The meat shop will be in the charge of three competent butchers, who will attend to the distribution and cutting up of the meat. The meat will be on sale on Friday and Saturday of each week. It was made clear that only bona fide relief workers would be able to purchase the meat, and that no profit would be made. A vote of thanks was accorded to the Mayor (Mr K. A. M. Leaver) and councillors. who hac? agreed to help the scheme. It was decided that a deputation wait on the Borough Council to protest against tiie present arrangement with regard to wet days, the men having to report in the afternoon if it had been declared wet in the morning. The deputation will also protest against men living at one end of the borough having Id work at the other end. Mr Airey and Mrs Richardson were elected to the committee, and it was decided to elect a women’s auxiliary committee, the election to he left until the next general meeting.
