RACING COMPETITION.
Publishers of Newspaper Charged. Per Frees Association. PALMERSTON N., July 16. Five charges, alleging breaches of the Gaming Act by the Sunday News Publishing Company, came before the Magistrate, Mr Stout, to-day. The charges referred to a . weekly competition conducted by the defendants in which persons were asked to forecast the winner of each race of a specified race meeting in order to be engaged by the “Sunday News” to advise on the form of horses at a subsequent meeting. The prize, if the full eight winners were picked was £SO and if less than eight £25. It was announced by the Crown Prosecutor that the case was a test one to determine the legality of the competition and revolved around the point whether the paper was bought for the purposes of a coupon only. Judgment was reserved. 1
