Building Now Being Demolished. A familiar city landmark for many years, Carey’s corner yesterday passed into the hands of men w'hose job it is to demolish the old building. In three weeks’ time the building will be levelled to the ground and in its place will rise the new State Theatre. Seven men are at present engaged on the building, working on the interior. Next week more hands will be employed and it will not be long then till the outer walls begin coming down. On the completion of the demolition work an immediate start will be made with the erection of the new theatre, which it is expected will be completed in November. Mr John Bates, principal of John Bates and Co., Ltd., said yesterday that his firm had leased Carey’s Corner to Amalgamated Theatres (N.Z.) Ltd., as from May 1 last. “We are erecting the new building and theatre at our own cost, between £14,000 and £15,000 We are ankious to get started on the work of building the theatre as soon as possible in order that jobs may be found for a large body of men in the winter months,” he said.
