WORK ON RESERVES.
Curator Reports to City Council. The customary reports on the work being done by the Reserves Department in the various parks and reserves in the city were received at last evening’s meeting of the City Council in the statement of the Reserves Committee. The reports stated that in most of the parks and reserves routine operations had been carried out. At the nursery the main work in hand was the lifting and preparing for despatch of forest trees and other trees and shrubs for Bottle Lake and | other places, the preparing of hardwood cuttings, the lining out into nursery rows of young trees and shrubs and the raising of plants for next season’s bedding operations. During the past four weeks the following trees and plants had been sent out from the nursery:— Bottle Lake, 54,000 pines; parks and reserves, 295 trees, 1043 shrubs and 2139 herbaceous plants. At Bottle Lake good progress was being made with the season's planting operations. During heavy frosts, however, it was impracticable to carry out planting until after mid-day owing to the sand being frozen into a solid mass for a depth of several inches.
Returfing operations had been carried out where’ necessary at Sydenham Park and to act as a screen a narrow border had been trenched and planted from the main entrance in Brougham Street to the public conveniences.
