WORK ON RELIEF.

City Council Receives Reports.

Reports on the unemployment relief works were received at last evening’s meeting of the City Council from the Reserves and \V jrks Committees. The Reserves Committee’s report stated that during the past fortnight the average number of men employed by the Reserves Department per week was 281. They were placed on work in the various parks and reserves, and also on vegetable growing.

The Works Committee’s report stated that all relief workers were proceeding satisfactorily. Advice had been received from the Labour Department in reference to men who were considered physically unfit to undertake ordinary work which was offered, and the Department had asked that these men be stood dowi and instructed to report at the employment bureau. There were a number of men working on various jobs around the city who were not considered capable of doing a full day’s work, and a list of them had been prepared. It was not proposed to include on the list, however, men who, while being incapable of doing heavy work, were quite capable ol doing such work as chipping, and were good, conscientious workers. Neither was it proposed to include the returned soldiers engaged on levelling work at the Sandilands reserve, the nature of which was considered to be within their capabilities. As the metalling of Riccarton Avenue was now completed, there was a large supply of m.etal available for unemployment relief works, and two jobs authorised last year, but not completed, had been put in hand, namely, Ollivier’s Road from Ferry Road to Tuam Street, and Watford Street from Norman's Road to Street.
